95 points Halliday Wine Companion
Our recently released 2024 Old Vine Grenache was awarded 95 points by Jane Faulkner and her great review has been published on the Halliday Wine Companion site.
"How old is old? Well vines planted in 1932. And look at that price – an absolute bargain, especially as this is a delicious, gorgeous drink. Yes, there’s a touch of red lollies but mostly exuberant red fruits, all punctuated by fresh herbs and warm spices. Juicy, tangy acidity keeps this buoyant but so, too, do lovely textural, sandy tannins. Surely this vies for the best value old-vine wine in Australia? I’m sold." Jane Faulkner
Our great uncle Harry Follett, and his younger brother Len, [Ken's father] planted these vines on our property, as the review says, in 1932. Once producing, the fruit was sold to Bleasdale across the river for their fortified wines. We have six rows of grenache still producing beautiful fruit and if you are visiting in Autumn, you will notice they are the last vines to lose their leaves. So, there is a golden ribbon of grenache across the vineyard - it's stunning!
We've been making a straight varietal grenache since 1995 in small quantities, available at cellar door and via mail order only. Occasionally, we pick selected panels of the vineyard later, for fortifying and 15 or so years later, it will find its way into a bottle of The Gramps.
